Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 16, 2026

This policy covers the FluentTab Chrome extension, the fluenttab.com website, and the api.fluenttab.com backend service (together, “FluentTab”, “we”, “us”). FluentTab is a language-learning assistant: it translates and explains text you select while browsing, and offers a realtime voice tutor.

The short version

  • Translation, explanations, and text-to-speech run on your device. The text you select on webpages is processed locally and is never sent to our servers.
  • We do not collect your browsing history, the pages you visit, or the content of those pages.
  • If you sign in, we store only your email address and a Google account identifier — nothing else about your Google account.
  • During a voice-tutor session, your audio streams directly between your browser and OpenAI. Our servers never see or store your audio or transcripts; we record only session timing for metering and billing.
  • We never sell your data.

Data processed on your device only

The following never leaves your browser and is stored locally via Chrome extension storage:

  • Selected text and translations — processed by a language model that runs inside the extension on your device.
  • Settings — the language you are learning, your home language, feature toggles, and hotkeys.
  • Downloaded model files — open-source translation and speech models fetched from Hugging Face; these downloads contain no personal data.
  • Voice memories — short summaries that personalize tutor sessions, generated by the local model on your device.

Uninstalling the extension deletes all of this local data.

Data we collect on our servers

  • Account data (only if you sign in with Google): your email address and Google account identifier, used to authenticate you and associate your subscription.
  • Subscription and billing data: your plan and subscription status. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see or store your card details.
  • Voice usage metering: start/end times and durations of voice-tutor sessions, used to enforce plan allowances. This is timing data only — no audio, no transcripts, no conversation content.
  • Website submissions: your email address if you join the waitlist, and your email and message if you contact us via the support page.

Third-party services

  • Google — sign-in (OAuth). Governed by Google's privacy policy.
  • OpenAI — powers the realtime voice tutor. During a session you start, your microphone audio and any context you explicitly share (a text selection or a screenshot region you drag-select) stream directly from your browser to OpenAI's Realtime API. See OpenAI's privacy policy for their handling.
  • Stripe — payment processing for paid plans.
  • Hugging Face — hosts the open-source model files the extension downloads. Your browser fetches these files directly; no account data is shared.
  • Vercel / Neon — host our website, API, and database.

Microphone access

The extension requests microphone access only when you explicitly start a voice-tutor conversation (via hotkey or button). Audio is streamed live to OpenAI for the conversation and is not recorded or stored by us. Ending the session releases the microphone.

Chrome Web Store disclosure

FluentTab's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We do not sell user data, do not use it for advertising, and do not use it for purposes unrelated to the extension's single purpose of language learning.

Data retention and deletion

Account and metering data are kept while your account is active. To delete your account and associated server-side data, or to request a copy of it, contact us via the support page — we will complete the request within 30 days. Waitlist and support submissions are deleted on request the same way.

Security

All communication with our servers uses HTTPS. Sign-in uses Google OAuth with short-lived tokens; refresh tokens rotate and are revoked on suspected reuse. Server-side data lives in an access-controlled database.

Children

FluentTab is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes

We will post any changes to this policy on this page and update the effective date above. Material changes will be highlighted in the extension or by email if you have an account.
