FluentTab is a free Chrome extension that turns any webpage into a language lesson. Select a word or sentence while you read and FluentTab shows a context-aware translation, the noun's gender article where the language has one, and a grammar explanation written for that exact sentence. It also includes a realtime voice tutor you can talk to about the text on screen.

FluentTab supports nine languages: German, Japanese, Spanish, French, Korean, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, English. You pick the language you are learning and the language you already speak, and every translation, explanation and spoken answer arrives in your own language. You can change the pair at any time.

Yes. All on-device features — translations, grammar explanations and read-aloud pronunciation — are unlimited and free forever, on every plan. The Free plan also includes 30 minutes of live voice tutoring each month. Paid plans (Plus and Unlimited) only buy additional voice-tutor minutes; they add no reading features.

Yes. FluentTab works on any webpage you can read in Chrome — news articles, blogs, documentation, online courses — including content rendered inside embedded readers and course viewers that most translation extensions cannot reach.

No. Translations, grammar explanations and text-to-speech are generated by an AI model that runs locally on your own device, inside your browser. The pages you visit and the text you select are never sent to FluentTab's servers, are never logged or profiled, and are never sold.

Google Translate converts text; FluentTab teaches it. FluentTab reads the surrounding sentence before answering, so it picks the meaning that actually fits the context, hands nouns back with the article that reveals their gender, and explains the grammar at work — case, conjugation, endings, word order — instead of only giving you the output. It also runs on your device rather than sending your reading to a server.

FluentTab runs on Google Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers including Microsoft Edge, Brave and Arc. It requires WebGPU support, which is available in Chrome 113 and later with hardware graphics acceleration enabled.

No account is needed for reading help. Install the extension and translations, gender articles, explanations and read-aloud all work immediately. You only sign in with Google if you want to use the live voice tutor, because voice minutes are metered per account.

Yes. FluentTab includes a realtime AI voice tutor you start with a single keystroke on any tab. It already knows what you have highlighted on the page, so you can ask what a sentence means out loud, practise your pronunciation and be corrected. It stays silent until you speak and stops the moment you interrupt it.

In gendered languages — German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch — FluentTab never shows you a bare noun. Every noun is returned with its definite article attached: der Apfel, la pomme, il libro, het boek. You learn the gender with the word instead of memorising it separately afterwards, which is how native speakers store it.

Yes — that is what it is built for. FluentTab is designed for people who learn by reading real material rather than flashcards. It stays out of the way until a word stops you, answers in place, and disappears as soon as you deselect, so you keep reading at close to full speed.

FluentTab is free to install and free to use for all reading features. Paid plans are monthly subscriptions bought inside the extension and can be cancelled at any time from the extension popup, which opens the Stripe customer portal. Cancelling returns you to the Free plan; nothing is deleted.
