Learn Dutch while you browse

FluentTab turns every Dutch page you read into a lesson. Select a word or a sentence and the translation that fits this sentence appears right where you are looking — with the article that gives away its gender, and a grammar explanation written for that exact line.

Dutch has only two articles, which sounds simple until you learn that nothing about a noun tells you whether it is a de-word or a het-word.

What it explains in Dutch

Hover the translation and a patient teacher appears. The explanation is written for the sentence in front of you, not copied from a textbook chapter:

  • de / het — the split you can only learn one noun at a time
  • verb-second order, and the verbs pushed to the end
  • separable verbs split across the clause
  • adjective endings that appear and disappear with the article

Everything you get for Dutch

  • Context-aware translation. FluentTab reads the surrounding sentence before answering, so you get the meaning that belongs here — not a dictionary's first entry.
  • Gender, every time. Nouns come back as het boek, never bare. You learn de, het with the word instead of afterwards.
  • Grammar in context. Why this ending, this case, this word order — for this sentence.
  • Native pronunciation. One tap reads the selection aloud in a clear, consistent Dutch voice.
  • A voice tutor that sees your page. One keystroke starts a spoken conversation about the text you just highlighted. Ask what it means, practise saying it, get corrected.
  • Explanations in your language. Learning Dutch from Spanish, Japanese or any of the nine? Every answer arrives in the language you already speak.
  • Private by design. The model runs on your device. What you read never leaves your browser.

Dutch questions

How does FluentTab help me learn Dutch?

FluentTab is a free Chrome extension that turns anything you read in Dutch into a lesson. Select a word or sentence on any webpage and it shows a translation chosen for that sentence's meaning, the noun's article (de, het), and a grammar explanation written for that exact sentence. You can also hear it read aloud in a native voice, and talk about it with an AI voice tutor that already knows what you highlighted.

How do I remember Dutch noun genders?

Learn the article with the word rather than after it. FluentTab never shows you a bare Dutch noun — selecting "boek" returns "het boek" (the book), with de or het attached every time. Seeing the gender bound to the noun in real sentences is how native speakers store it, and it removes the separate memorisation step entirely.

Is there a free Chrome extension for learning Dutch?

Yes. FluentTab is free to install from the Chrome Web Store, and all of its Dutch reading features — translation, grammar explanations and read-aloud pronunciation — are unlimited and free forever, with no account required. Only the live voice tutor is metered, and the free plan includes 30 minutes of it per month.

Can I read Dutch news and articles with FluentTab?

Yes. FluentTab works on every website, including content inside embedded readers and online-course viewers. It is built for learning from real Dutch material rather than flashcards: it stays hidden until a word stops you, answers in place, and disappears the moment you deselect, so you keep reading at nearly full speed.

Does FluentTab send what I read in Dutch to a server?

No. Dutch translations, grammar explanations and text-to-speech are generated by an AI model running locally on your own device inside the browser. The pages you visit and the text you select never reach FluentTab's servers and are never logged, profiled or sold.
